For example, if you'd like a better tee-shot, you may say something like this:

I always drive my ball straight down the center of the fairway. Hitting straight shots off the tee is natural for me. My friends are envious of my consistent tee shot.

While you are saying this, visualize your ball going straight down the center of the fairway. Imagine hearing your friends saying what a great shot it is. Imagine how you feel when you hit such a great shot.

This will have the most effect when you say it in a relaxed, sleepy state of mind, when you are most open to suggestions. Sit in a comfortable chair, take a few deep breaths and close your eyes. Imagine seeing the numbers starting with ten, and going down to one. When you get to one, take several deep breaths, and simply say "relax" to yourself softly.

Begin to slowly and softly say the statement to yourself, while visualizing the perfect tee shot.

If you do this two or three times a day for a week or two, you will see some dramatic improvements in your tee shot. After you've perfected this part of your game, you can move on to your short game, or putting, or whatever else you'd like to improve.

How to Prepare For a Golf Tournament

Your club's Match Play or Club Championship is coming up, so how do you get your game in shape? Your tournament will not have grand stands and TV cameras but do not think you will not feel the pressure. With a little thought and preparation, you can give yourself the needed confidence to beat your archrival, win the Club Championship or Match Play tournament.

Granted with your tournament nerves, you are probably not going to be swinging as smooth as Ernie Els when the big day arrives. Now is NOT the time to start messing with your golf swing. I repeat. It is NOT the time to make any major golf swing changes. First of all this is supposed to be fun. You know, better than anyone, your own tendencies. Depending on how much time you have before your golf tournament, chances are you are going to have to find a way to play with what you got. This is fine.

Most of these types of tournaments are flighted. This means players with similar handicaps are pitted against each other. What you can do is check your basics. Review your posture, grip, alignment, and ball position and insure they are in the best shape they can be for your game. Hitting balls is fine but do not go overboard on making changes. The most effective thing you can work on is your swing tempo and insuring that your golf swing is in balance. You can do this by simply counting to three once you finish your golf swing.

Since the average of greens hit in regulation on the PGA Tour is only twelve, you will miss some greens during your round. Set up a practice schedule for your short game up until the golf tournament. You can go out in the evenings when the course is quiet. Go from green to green hitting multiple pitch and chip shots from all around the green. In addition, choose a couple of "nasty" lies just in case you hit a good shot that ends up in a bad place. Although the ultimate goal is to hole the ball, sometime you may need to play away from the hole to be able to make the next shot easier.

Spend most of your time on the practice putting green working on short putts,very short putts. Hit as many two to three foot putts as you can. This does a couple of things for you. First it gives you confidence to see the ball go in the hole over and over again. Second, you will be able to see if you are starting the golf ball on the correct line.

Do not forget to take a look at your golf equipment. Are your grips in good shape? Do they need replaced? If your grips do not need to be replaced, scrub them vigorously with a stiff brush. Use a solution of warm water and dishwashing soap with a degreaser to clean your grips. The degreaser will help remove the oil and dirt buildup that accumulates from your hands over a period of time. Rinse your grips well and pat dry with a towel.

Tournament day is here! Go through your normal warm up. Hit a few pitches, and make sure before you leave the practice green you make about five or ten two footers in a row. Seeing and hearing the ball go in the hole will give you great confidence as you head to the golf course.

Golf Ball Speed And How It Effects You

Everyone wants to hit the golf ball farther. Golfers are buying new clubs time and time again to get this coveted prize. The truth is that only increasing your golf ball speed off of the driver will equate into more distance. Period.

With this being said, advances in science has given the manufactures, golf swing instructors as well as the top fitness instructors more factual information than ever before about what really happens in a golf swing.

Top golf instructors understand the relationship between distance and golf ball speed and are turning to launch monitors and other types of golf ball tracking technology. Golf launch monitors can be simple and affordable to very complex and cost thousands of dollars.

Golf ball speed is determined by a simple equation. The easy equation is that your golf ball speed is equal to one and a half times your club head speed. For example if you have a golf swing speed of 100mph then your golf ball speed will be 150mph. Another example would be the television announcers over the weekend said the PGA Tour average club head speed is 112 mph. This equates to 168mph golf ball speed.

As we all know the wind can play a role in how far or how short your golf ball will travel. Your distance is also dictated by other facets of the weather and more specifically the temperature.

Picture the first example. A sunny day in July and you are on the golf course enjoying the nice warm 95 degree day. You pull up to your ball which is 150 yards to the flag and you automatically pull a seven iron. You pure it (Of Course!) and the ball flies over the green.

In the second example, you again have 150 yards to the hole but now it is late fall and 45 degrees. You pull out your seven iron again and hit another good shot. This time the ball ends up on the front of the green or just short of it. What is going on have you lost distance?

The good news it is not just you. For every 25 degree drop in temperature the ball will fly approximately eight yards shorter than before. If you do the math in the examples above, it all starts to become clearer.

With all of the new technology available to the golf world, it has never been a more interesting time to try to improve and learn about your game. Ways To Construct Your Golf Training Schedule

Training correctly is the most important part of your training routine. The most commonly forgotten part of golf training is shots near the green. Spending hours at the driving range hitting arrow straight drive might be exciting, but working on shots in the 100 yard range improves your scores faster.

For and training regiment to be effective, you must keep a regular routine. Golf training time should be shared equally between driving and approaches. An hour pounding drives should at least equal an hour on the putting green.

Do not neglect approach shots either, or chip shots and or shots out of the sand. A long, arrow straight drive is a thing of beauty to watch, but an accurate chip shot will save two-puts and win matches. When training, it is best to simulate real world conditions. Sure, you could rake the sand perfectly smooth for each and every practice shot and place ball gently on top, but that will never happen on the course. Toss the ball straight up in the air to simulate the dreaded fried egg flop. Set your practice shots up right against the wall of the sand trap practice high angle outs, or the smart shot off to the side.

Has it been a while since the grass was trimmed somewhere? Practice saving your game from the cabbage. Just because you cannot spend all of your time at the driving range does not mean you can practice. If you spent an hour at the driving range this morning, then you owe yourself an hour of short game practice. Take a bucket of balls to the local park and practice chipping from the tan bark, or the untrimmed edges of the grass.

Incorporating your putter into your training routine will prove the most important thing you can do. More matches are decided on the green than any other part of the course. Practice the long shots, the short taps and even a few from the fringe while on the putting green.

Do not forget that you can practice at home too. You can chip from the garden and weed at the same time. Refrain from mowing the back yard another week and practice some light chip shots. Find a neighbor and take turns hitting practice balls into each other yard to work on blind chip shots.

Regular practice is the most important element in your training routine. You will be better off with an hour, three times a day than four hours on a Sunday. Most important, enjoy your time. Golf is no fun if becomes work.

How To Get Your Head Around Learning Golf

So you've thought about playing golf or you already golf? Fantastic! How do you get your head around learning the game?

To begin, I intend on making something crystal clear: every golfer, even elite golfers were at one-stage beginners! Every golfer at the beginning stages of their learning were interested in getting the ball in the air. Regardless of your current stage of development you can and will improve!

As a Golf Psychology Coach, I work with golfers of varying standards from total beginners through to tournament Professionals and Coaches. What I can tell from my experience is that the most important factor in determining a golfers likelihood of continual improvement is their ATTITUDE TO LEARNING GOLF!

It's vital that you empower yourself with useful beliefs about your ability to learn golf. For example, a beginner needs to believe that golf is both a fun and easy game to learn. Despite some coaches not believing this, there are golf coaches like myself who believe this whole heartily. As someone who has played at an elite level (collegiate golf) and studied extensively, I can tell you that it is an EASY GAME. If you keep things simple and back your belief to learn the game you will improve!

It is your responsibility as a golfing student to seek out the guidance of coaches with empowering beliefs about your potential to learn and improve. Not doing this would be like having surgery from a doctor who didn't think the operation would be successful, there's no way you would do that with your body right? Nor should you do that with your golf.

Raise your standards for golf instruction; make a decision for yourself that you will only seek out instruction from those coaches who are qualified, credible and resourced with empowering beliefs about your ability to improve.

Tips For Increasing Golf Driving Distance

For many amateurs golf can be a very frustrating sport. They step up on the tee and are never quite sure which direction the ball is going to travel off of their club face. However the one thing that keeps bringing people back for more and more is the wonderful feeling of striking a ball flush from the middle of their driver. As an old Taylor Made ad stated "distance makes the heart grow fonder."

The mechanics of a golf swing are more complex than perhaps that of any other sport on the planet. A good golf swing must be underpinned with sold fundamentals including solid grip, square alignment to the target, a solid base / stance, and a dynamic upright posture. For the purpose of this article I am going to assume that you have solid basic fundamentals. If you are a chronic slicer of the ball, hook the ball regularly or even top or slice the ball these tips will serve only to add length to your shot shape. Thus if your natural shot is a "hook" for example, the ball will travel further but in the direction of your natural shot.

Please try a selection of the following tips and see which ones have a positive impact on your game. I can guarantee that you will begin to hit the ball further than you have ever done before.

Tip # 1 - Change Your Equipment

Perhaps the easiest way to add distance to your drives without changing any of the mechanics of your swing, is to change your equipment. Simply changing to a harder two piece ball with a hard outer layer will add approximately 10 yards to a well struck drive. You will lose an element of control around the greens, but for winter golf or even a higher handicap golfer the change will be worthwhile.

Modern drivers have changed the way the game is played. Large oversized titanium heads have provided golfers with an unmatched level of performance and forgiveness. These drivers will add distance to your drive by virtue of the fact titanium is lighter than steel. Thus even though the head size has increased the overall swing weight has been reduced. This enables drivers to generate more club head speed thus increasing the distance the ball travels. The very fact the head size has been increased, means that off center hits will also travel much further because the size of the sweet spot has increased accordingly.

The most important element in the distance and accuracy of your drives is the often overlooked type of shaft you are using. If you are using a steel shaft, you are sacrificing club head speed due to the additional weight. You really should get a custom fit graphite shaft suited to your swing. If you are a beginner or a golfer with a relatively slow swing speed then you will gain additional distance by playing with a whippy flexible shaft. These shafts have a higher kick point so that at impact they spring at the ball and unleash an additional burst of speed through impact. However beware if you have a higher swing speed a stiffer shaft will produce longer straighter results. This is one element of your game that you need custom fit equipment. Run a search on Google to find a custom fit center near you.

Tip # 2 - Adopt a Stronger Grip

A neutral golf grip is when you can see 2 knuckles of your left hand / the hand at the top of the shaft. A weak grip is when you see less than 2 knuckles on the upper hand. This action tends to promote a fade or slice as the grip returns to neutral at impact thus ensuring the face is opened if the grip is weak. A strong grip is one in which you can see 3 or 4 knuckles on your left hand (for right handed golfers).

A good way to measure a strong grip is to make the "V's" formed by the thumb and index finger point towards your right shoulder. A strong grip will tend to promote a draw which every golfer knows is a top spin shot that travels much further.

This is especially true with their left hand. To achieve this you should see about three to four knuckles on your left hand. This gives you so much more leverage in terms of your wrist movement. You are able to wait to the last moment to release the club, which results in a surge of club head speed through impact.

Tip # 3 - Release Tensions in Your Hands and Arms

If you were to really tense up your leg muscles and attempt to run a race, you would not be able to walk very fast let alone say run. The muscles in your hands and arms are no different. The grip pressure is perhaps the most important element to eliminating a tense rigid swing. Grip pressure should be light but firm. Professional golfers have stated that you should grip the golf club with the same pressure as if you were:

Lightly squeezing a tube of tooth paste
Holding a child's hand
Holding a small bird in your hand
Use which ever analogy is best for you but remember always be conscious of your grip pressure especially just before you commence your take away. It is impossible to hold the club too lightly. Your muscles will instinctively increase grip pressure throughout your swing to ensure the club does not fly out of your hands.

A light grip pressure will also have the positive effect of releasing tension in your arms. Build a few waggles into your pre-shot routine to further ensure there is no build up of tension.

You will be shocked an amazed how much further your ball will fly as a result of relaxed hand and arm muscles.

Tip # 4 - Increase the Width of Your Arc

Try this simple drill to realize the importance of the swing arc. Hold a golf ball in your hand 10 or so inches directly over your right shoulder. Now throw the ball as far as you can. You will notice the ball didn't travel very far. Now extend you right hand back as far as is comfortably possible and throw the ball as far as you can. You will notice that the ball traveled significantly further. Many amateur golfers fail to realize the importance of the width of the swing arc in determining the distance the ball flies.

Perhaps the best tip that I have come across for creating a wide powerful swing arc is that of Greg Normans. Greg Norman has long been one of the longest straightest drivers of the golf ball. His tip is simple and powerful. At your address position ensure your left arm and club shaft form a straight line down to the ball. Make sure there is no tension whatsoever in the hand or arm.

Now simply push your left elbow back away from the target. Keep pushing it back, back, back all the way. Sooner or later as your swing reaches the three quarter way position, somethings going to give and your wrist will automatically cock at the top. This business of an early wrist cock advocated by some of the games teachers doesn't work very well because it eliminates the extension of your arc which is a key source of power in the swing. This is a powerful technique easy to reproduce that will add yards to your drives with practice.

Tip # 5 - Delay the Club Head Release Through Impact

Many of the games greats will differ in their back swing but generate a very similar down swing sequence. Contrast "Jim Furyk" with "Tiger Woods". One swing attribute that they all have in common is a powerful late release of the club head (also known as club head lag). In my opinion the golfer with one of the most powerful late releases is "Sergio Garcia". He has a rather unorthodox back swing but a powerful late release ensures he hits the golf ball a long, long way. What I mean by late release of the golf club is a delayed uncocking/release of the wrists just before impact.

Many amateurs suffer from the dreaded 'casting' motion whereby they throw the club at the ball from the top of the swing. Thus they are releasing all their power long before the club ever nears the ball. In order to create a late release you should consciously focus on retaining your fully cocked wrists for as long as possible prior to impact. I have come across two excellent tips to achieve this goal. Please only use one or the other as you should never have two simultaneous swing thoughts prior to impact. The club head is moving too fast to execute more than one.

Insert a tee peg at the butt end of your shaft and focus on the mental image of trying to drive that tee peg into the back of the ball. To condense this into one neat phrase think "pull butt of shaft down to back of ball". This will cause a very late release of your club and store up considerable power during the downswing which can be effectively delivered to the back of the ball.

Ernie Els advocates a late release maneuver created by Harvey Pennick called 'Golf's Magic Move'. To execute this technique, one you arrived at the top of your back swing think "right elbow down to right side". This effectively retains the wrist angle and ensures a late release into the back of the ball.

Tip # 6 - Increase Your Coil

This move is not for those who have a stiff, unsupple back or back problems in any sense of the word. Effectively one of the greatest sources of power in a golf swing is the coiling of your shoulder turn against your hip turn. The further you can turn your shoulder and limit your hip turn the more wind up you generate in the backswing. This results in a powerful uncoiling in the downswing generating substantial power into the back of the ball.

The effect is similar to wrapping an elastic band around your finger. The more tightly you wind it the faster it unwinds. A good mental image to achieve this goal is to imagine you are standing in a barrel of cement. Your legs and hips are thus restricted in their movement. Now focus on turning your back fully to the target. This will create a powerful shoulder turn on top of a limited hip turn. You will generate substantial increases in the distance your ball flies with this one tips alone.

Tip # 7 - Widen Your Stance, Retain Flex in Right Knee

In order to generate strong club head speed, you need a stable base to ensure it is correctly delivered to the back of the ball. Ensure the inside of your insteps are outside the width of your shoulders. To ensure the correct distance apart simply hang two clubs vertically from the outside of both shoulders. The club heads should be directly over the insteps in both feet.

Tip # 8 - Retain Flex in Right Knee

A critical element in the creation of a powerful golf swing is the retention of flex in the right knee in the back swing. If your right knee straightens it's like snapping the tension in the swing and all your power is immediately destroyed.

A good tip is to bend the right knee and tilt it slightly in towards the ball. Focus on retaining this inward tilt throughout the back swing. Then in the downswing start with leading your front left leg slightly toward the target. This ensures dynamic impact position and helps retain the angle in your wrist thus delivering a late release.

Golf Swing Tempo - Is A Golf Fundamental

Without a doubt, golf swing tempo IS a fundamental of the golf swing. However, it would appear to be the most overlooked and underwritten about. What doesn't help, is that half of what I read on the subject is just nonsense anyway. If I were a high handicapper, some of these articles would leave me more mystified about Swing Tempo than when I started them.

Here is an excerpt from such an article...."Get into a rhythm with your swing by counting one on the way back, two at the top (give it a little pause) and three on the way down." Now I ask you, do you understand this. I know I don't. If you and I both counted to three, and it were timed, there's a good chance that we would not both do it, in the same time frame. Our nature would affect the count. Would your little pause be longer or shorter than my little pause? It will be our brains that are doing the counting, and it's our brains that get us into so much trouble, out on the course, in the first place. Will we count to three in the same calm way, when we are facing a 150 yard carry over a lake to a bunker guarded green?.......I think not! I don't know that I ever saw Tiger, Phil or VJ taking this little pause.

The article goes on further to suggest that, when practicing at the range, this pause should be for TWO SECONDS! Now I ask you, does this sound like Golf Swing Tempo training? If you are going to hold at the top of the back swing for 2 seconds, then why not just cut out the middleman. Yes, that's right, forget the whole address the ball, waggle, smooth take away and the rest. Just start your swing at the top. Like facing a pitcher with a baseball bat in your hands. Trust me though, you can kiss swing speed Goodbye!

If you are a golfer, then I'm sure that it's safe to say, that if I were to ask you to write a list of the fundamentals of golf, you would probably hand me a list that included:

* Grip
* Posture
* Ball Position
* Alignment
* Pre-swing Routine

..and you wouldn't be wrong. I'd be mightily impressed. I could take those fundamentals to the range with a bunch of books and magazines and work on them. But sooner or later I'm going to ask you, (Because I'm an inquisitive kind of guy), "This is all great stuff, but how fast should I swing?" Because after all, we are always hearing about club head speed, and how it affects distance.

So let us add Swing Tempo to our list of golf fundamentals. In fact, lets put it in 3rd Place, right behind grip and alignment. The reason being is that, if you have a basic understanding of swing technique, then Swing Tempo is the glue that holds it all together. Pausing at the top of your back swing, for anywhere between a pause and 2 seconds is the stuff that will bring it crashing down. In fact this will more than likely cause you to 'Cast,' or come over the top in the swing. With good tempo, the left knee should be starting it's Downswing move to the left, just as the hands and club are reaching the top of the back swing.

I don't disagree totally with the counting system. What you need though is a device to dictate the count, a device that is external. A device that is not your brain. Be it one of the many golf swing tempo devices, a simple and inexpensive metronome, or a piece of music with a beat that you can swing to. If you are an Iphone user, there is even an application that you can download exactly for the purpose.

Now it is often said that most high handicappers swing too fast. This is not, in fact, the case. Most swing too slow, but their swings look fast because they lack a decent tempo. Either a really quick take away that then slows on the way to impact, or the reverse. Ernie Els' 'Big Easy' swing, is in fact, exactly the same tempo as Phil Mickelson's and VJ Singh's. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player's were slightly faster. Where the tour pros do not vary, is in the ratio of their swings. THIS IS KEY! The tour pros ALL swing at a 3 To 1 Ratio. However long they take getting to the top of their back swing is 3 Times that of getting the club head back to impact!

So there you go. Probably the simplest fundamental you ever read. Get to the range with some type of timing device, and swing to a 3 TO 1 Ratio. The magic thing about it is, that you will find yourself so engrossed with listening to the Beats, that all other swing thoughts (particularly negative ones), will leave your head. Try different tempos (NOT RATIOS) and find the one that suits your personality. When you have, you can take your new tempo onto the course, where my guess is, you'll swing with a new found confidence.

Buyers have become even more confused and frustrated on what is the best golf product that will give you that extra roll, stop on a dime on the greens or give you the back spin needed. Carbon graphite works very well. It's a very stiff material, and it can be tailored very simply to give whipishness or stiffness, depending on the flexibility and strength of the golfer.

These technical changes in golf club designs, has now become ever fast changing in the golf industry. Product development is critical, as each vendor has its own demands for pricing, shapes, materials, weights, hardness, stability, center of gravity, and other specifications for their club heads.

A short product life cycle is another hurdle to overcome. You must always stay ahead of market trends in order to help the customers,and be able to stay ahead of your competitors. You still have to meet demands, and at the same time improve upon increasing accuracy and quality.

It's extremely important to have an information infrastructure. The internet plays a huge roll in product development. You can save time by networking a large share of the business by lowering costs, improving quality, and shortening development time.

There's a human factor involved when looking into biomechanics,and its implications of research and development. It's not exact science when trying to define golf swing mechanics, or trying to consider a golfers behavior and emotions logically.

While a golf swing may seem like a simple movement, it's actually quite complex, and the smallest variable can send a golf ball into a sand trap, or worse.

As a golfer swings, the club twists and gains speed during the downswing, so the face of the club is angled as it strikes the ball. That angle gives the ball its lift and, along with the ball's aerodynamic properties, helps determine its trajectory. That's also why it was important to measure the golf balls lift, drag, and other properties and their contribution to distance. Through different models it's easier to describe why a golf ball flies as it does.

Math and Science have become increasingly important to the designing of golf equipment. Billions have been spent each year on research and development in order to improve upon mathematical models and biomechanics research presented by the U.S.G.A. If your golf score stinks, it's not your clubs, or your golf ball, or your lack of practice. Face it folks. It's your swing!!!

You and I will not likely ever have a golf swing like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, but we can certainly get better than we are now. Wouldn't it be great to get away from the 100's, or 90's, maybe get into the 80's. I even got a 78 recently!
